INTRODUCTION: changes in cognitive performance and memory of older adults (OA) can interfere in their reporting their diet. OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the impact of memory bias in dietary estimation between OA and their primary caregivers (PC) through the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for Mexican OA and weighed food records (WFR). METHODS: the present analysis uses the estimated dietary information based on the response provided by 51 older adults (OA) and their primary caregivers (PC) from the validation study of the FFQ for Mexicans OA was conducted during lockdowns for COVID-19. The personnel who applied FFQ and WFR were trained with standardized instruments and procedures. The Wilcoxon test was used to compare the intake per day of the foods and food groups, the Spearman correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the grams of intake per day of the food groups, and kappa coefficient was used to compare the level of food items and food groups between OA and PC. RESULTS: in 11 of 14 food groups, no significant differences were observed between the amounts of intake reported by OA and PC. In the groups of dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and legumes, moderate agreement was observed (κ = 0.63 to 0.79), and in the rest of the groups was strong to perfect (κ ≥ 0.80). Correlation of the amount of intake between OA and PC was high in all food groups (r ≥ 0.87). CONCLUSION: the high correlation and high agreement between the amounts and frequencies of the food groups consumed as reported by the older adults and primary caregivers indicate that the information from both respondents is reliable.

OBJETIVO: Describir la tendencia en las prácticas de alimentación infantil en México antes y después de la pandemia por Covid-19, usando datos de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición (Ensanut) 2012, 2018-19, 2021 y 2022. Material y métodos. Población: mujeres 12-59 años y sus hijos/as < 24 meses. Se calcularon los indicadores de alimentación infantil según la Organización Mundial de la Salud 2021. Se realizaron modelos de regresión logística para analizar tendencias entre encuestas ajustando por variables sociodemográficas, considerando el diseño muestral. Se muestran las tendencias de lactancia materna (LM) y fórmula comercial infantil (FCI) por área urbano/rural y ocupación de la madre. RESULTADOS: La prevalencia ajustada de LM exclusiva en niñas/os menores de seis meses aumentó (14.8% en 2012; 28.6% en 2018-19 y 33.6% en 2021-22; p<0.001). El consumo de FCI en niñas/os < 12 meses se redujo de 62.8 a 42.8% entre 2012 y 2018-19 y permaneció en 43.3% en 2021-22 (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONES: Las prácticas de alimentación infantil mejoraron principalmente entre 2012 y 2018-19, y la tendencia positiva se desaceleró en 2021-22.

OBJETIVO: Estimar prevalencias de indicadores de prácticas de alimentación infantil en menores de 24 meses en México. Material y métodos. Análisis de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición Continua 2021 y 2022 (Ensanut Continua 2021 y 2022) en mujeres de 14-59 años y sus hijos/as menores de 24 meses (<24 meses). Se calcularon los indicadores ajustando por diseño muestral de las encuestas. RESULTADOS: El 33.6% de niñas/os <6 meses recibió lactancia materna exclusiva (LME). El 27.2% de niñas/os <24 meses no recibió LME durante los primeros tres días de vida y fue alimentado con fórmula comercial infantil (FCI) u otro líquido. El 42% de niñas/os de entre 6 y 23 meses consumió alimentos no saludables. CONCLUSIONES: Las prácticas de alimentación infantil en México deben ser protegidas mediante políticas que regulen la comercialización de FCI y promuevan un entorno laboral, social y político propicio para la lactancia materna y el cuidado infantil, para que madres, padres y cuidadores puedan adoptar prácticas de lactancia y alimentación complementaria adecuadas.

Evidence about the association between breastfeeding and its duration with growth, appetite and satiety indicators, and adiposity in low and middle-income countries facing nutritional transition is scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between longitudinal patterns of breastfeeding (exclusive [EBF] and continued [CBF]) with adiposity and growth, and the mediating role of appetite and satiety indicators in these associations in Mexican children during the first 2 years of life. Information from 378 mother-child pairs from the MAS-Lactancia birth cohort was analysed. Information was collected at birth and at months 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 of life. Duration of EBF and CBF was computed. Linear mixed models were used to assess the association of EBF and CBF with growth and adiposity. Path analysis was used for mediation analysis. Compared with the reference group (EBF duration <1 month), males with >3 to ≤6 months of EBF had less abdominal circumference (ß = -0.66, p = 0.05), Z-score weight-for-length (ß = -0.17, p = 0.19) and length-for-age (ß = -0.49, p < 0.01). Participants without CBF beyond 6 months had higher BMI Z-score (ß = 0.19, p < 0.01), abdominal circumference (ß = 0.62, p < 0.01) and skinfold sum (ß = 0.80, p = 0.09), and o difference in length-for-age. For EBF, mediation was confirmed for satiety responsiveness on the association with BMI Z-Score, for food fussiness for the association with abdominal circumference and length-for-age Z-score, and enjoyment of food on the association with length-for-age Z-score. For CBF, mediation was confirmed for food fussiness in the association with length-for-age. This study suggests that a longer exposure to EBF and CBF is associated with lower adiposity in children under 2 years of age, and that this association could be partially mediated by appetite and satiety indicators.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate energy contribution (EC) of food groups in 2016, to compare consumption against Mexican Dietary Guidelines, and to examine changes in EC from 2012 to 2016. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 24-hour dietary recalls from the 2012 and 2016 National Health and Nutrition Surveys (Ensanut). Foods and beverages were clas-sified into eight food groups: cereals, legumes, dairy, meats, fruit and vegetables, fats and oils, sugar-sweetened beverages, and high in saturated fat and added sugar (HSFAS) products. RESULTS: Cereals had the highest EC (30.1%), followed by meats (15.9%), HSFAS products (15.5%), and SSBs (10.5%). Fruits and vegetables, and legumes had the lowest contribu-tion with 6.4 and 3.8%, respectively. SSBs, meats, and HSFAS products were 250, 59 and 55% above the recommended intake, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This analysis confirms the need to generate a food environment conducive to a healthier diet.

Introduction: Introduction: there is scarce evidence of the effects of obesity and gestational weight- gain (GWG) on hemoglobin (Hb) levels in pregnancy. Little is known about the implications in offspring when pregnant mothers present with both at delivery. Aim: to identify if pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and GWG are associated with Hb levels at pregnancy third trimester; and identify if the BMI status plus anemia at delivery could influence offspring anthropometry. Methods: in a sub-sample of pregnant women (n = 108) and their offspring (n = 63) from a Mexican birth cohort, information from medical files and questionnaires were used to obtain pre-pregnancy BMI (categorized as normal, overweight, and obese), GWG, and Hb during pregnancy; at delivery and postpartum anthropometric measures were obtained for offspring. Adjusted regression models predicted Hb levels according to pre-pregnancy BMI and GWG; offspring growth trajectories from birth to 3 months old were compared according to mother´s BMI status and anemia combinations at delivery. Results: pre-pregnancy normal (N), overweight (OV), and obesity (OB) were present in 48 %, 40 %, and 12 % of the participants, respectively. Anemia was detected in 22.8 % of the participants at third trimester. Hb levels in the third trimester were significantly lower in those with pre-pregnancy OB-BMI and excessive GWG (12.1 g/dL, 95 % CI: 10.7-13.5) compared to those with pre-pregnancy OB-BMI and insufficient GWG (13.3g/dL, 95 %CI: 11.9-14.8) (p = 0.04). At delivery, 11 % presented with OB-BMI and anemia. Women with OB-BMI and normal Hb levels had children with higher scores in Weight-for-Length-Z score and triceps skinfold. Conclusion: among OB women, excessive GWG was associated with having lower Hb levels in the third trimester. Newborns had higher scores in growth patterns related to adiposity from birth to 3 months old if mothers had normal Hb levels and OB.


Introducción: Introducción: existe escasa evidencia de los efectos de obesidad y ganancia de peso gestacional (GPG) y niveles de hemoglobina (Hb) durante el embarazo. Poco se conoce sobre las implicaciones en la descendencia cuando las embarazadas presentan ambos en el momento del parto. Objetivos: identificar si el índice de masa corporal (IMC) previo al embarazo y el GPG están asociados con los niveles de Hb en el tercer trimestre del embarazo; e identificar si el IMC más la anemia en el momento del parto podrían influir en la antropometría de la descendencia. Metodología: se utilizó información de expedientes médicos y cuestionarios para obtener el IMC antes del embarazo (categorizado como normal, con sobrepeso y obesidad), GPG y Hb durante el embarazo; en el momento del parto y posparto se obtuvieron medidas antropométricas para la descendencia de una submuestra de mujeres embarazadas (n = 108) y su descendencia (n = 63) de una cohorte mexicana. Los modelos de regresión ajustados predijeron los niveles de Hb según IMC y GPG antes del embarazo; se compararon las trayectorias de crecimiento de la descendencia desde el nacimiento hasta los 3 meses de edad según el estado de IMC de la madre y las combinaciones de anemia en el momento del parto. Resultados: peso preembarazo normal (N), sobrepeso (SP) y obesidad (OB) estuvieron presentes en 48 %, 40 % y 12 % de las participantes, respectivamente. Se diagnosticó anemia en el 22,8 % de las participantes en el tercer trimestre. Los niveles de Hb en el tercer trimestre fueron significativamente más bajos en aquellas con IMC-OB antes del embarazo y GPG excesivo (12,1 g/dL, IC del 95 %: 10,7-13,5) en comparación con aquellas con IMC-OB antes del embarazo y GPG insuficiente (13,3 g/dl, IC del 95 %: 11,9-14,8) (p = 0,04). Al momento del parto, el 11 % presentó OB-BMI y anemia. Las mujeres con OB-BMI y niveles normales de Hb tenían hijos con puntuaciones más altas en puntuación Z de peso para longitud y pliegue cutáneo del tríceps. Conclusión: la GPG excesiva entre las mujeres OB se asoció con niveles más bajos de Hb en el tercer trimestre. Los recién nacidos tenían puntajes más altos en los patrones de crecimiento relacionados con la adiposidad desde el nacimiento hasta los 3 meses de edad si las madres tenían niveles normales de Hb y OB.

Resumen: Objetivo: Estimar la contribución energética (CE) de grupos de alimentos al compararla con las Guías Alimentarias y examinar los cambios de 2012 a 2016. Material y métodos: Se analizaron recordatorios de 24 horas de las Encuestas Nacionales de Salud y Nutrición de 2012 y 2016. Los alimentos y bebidas se clasificaron en ocho grupos: cereales, leguminosas, lácteos, carnes, frutas y verduras, grasas, bebidas azucaradas, y productos altos en grasa saturada y/o azúcares añadidos. Resultados: Los cereales tuvieron la CE más alta (30.1%), seguidos por carnes (15.9%), productos altos en grasa saturada y azúcares añadidos (15.5%) y bebidas azucaradas (10.5%). Frutas y verduras y leguminosas tuvieron la menor CE con 6.4 y 3.8%, respectivamente. Las bebidas azucaradas, carnes y productos altos en grasa saturada y azúcares añadidos superaron en 250, 59 y 55% la recomendación, respectivamente. Conclusión: Este análisis confirma la necesidad de generar un ambiente alimentario que propicie una dieta más saludable.

RESUMO

Globally, the prevalence of overweight and obesity, including among pregnant women, has substantially increased in the past three decades. This has been fueled by, among other factors, an increase in the consumption of high energy-dense foods and a decrease in physical activity. Additionally, global prevalence of anemia among pregnant women remains a public health concern. Overweight/obesity as well as anemia in pregnancy are independently associated with adverse health outcomes for the mother and offspring. In some pregnant women, the two conditions coexist. Yet current knowledge in this field, including prevalence rates, risk factors, and health consequences for mother and offspring being exposed to these conditions, is staggeringly sparse. In this review we describe the current evidence on prevalence rates, risk factors, and effects for mother and offspring regarding coexistence of overweight/obesity and anaemia in pregnant women based on a systematic literature search. We also highlight research gaps and suggest avenues for future research.

Perceived changes in diet quality, emotional eating, physical activity, and lifestyle were evaluated in a group of Mexican adults before and during COVID-19 confinement. In this study, 8289 adults answered an online questionnaire between April and May 2020. Data about sociodemographic characteristics, self-reported weight and height, diet quality, emotional eating, physical activity, and lifestyle changes were collected. Before and after confinement, differences by sociodemographic characteristics were assessed with Wilcoxon, Anova, and linear regression analyses. Most participants were women (80%) between 18 and 38 years old (70%), with a low degree of marginalisation (82.8%) and a high educational level (84.2%); 53.1% had a normal weight and 31.4% were overweight. Half (46.8%) of the participants perceived a change in the quality of their diet. The Diet Quality Index (DQI) was higher during confinement (it improved by 3 points) in all groups, regardless of education level, marginalisation level, or place of residence (p < 0.001). Lifestyle changes were present among some of the participants, 6.1% stopped smoking, 12.1% stopped consuming alcohol, 53.3% sleep later, 9% became more sedentary, and increased their screen (43%) as well as sitting and lying down time (81.6%). Mexicans with Internet access staying at home during COVID-19 confinement perceived positive changes in the quality of their diet, smoking, and alcohol consumption, but negative changes in the level of physical activity and sleep quality. These results emphasise the relevance of encouraging healthy lifestyle behaviours during and after times of crisis to prevent the risk of complications due to infectious and chronic diseases.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of childhood obesity has risen dramatically in recent years. A proportion of this burden has been attributed to factors that occur during the first 1000 days of life such as genetic predisposition, breast feeding and complementary feeding. Although the mechanisms by which these factors affect weight and adiposity are less well understood, appetite and satiety regulation may be a key to understanding them. This cohort study aims to investigate the role of appetite and satiety regulation as a mediator in the association between infant feeding practices and genetic polymorphisms with children's growth, adiposity and metabolic risk factors. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: 'MAS-Lactancia' (the first word means 'more' and is also an acronym in Spanish for 'Appetite and Satiety Mechanisms', the second word is 'breastfeeding') is an open, ongoing, prospective birth cohort that began the enrolment in 2016 of mother-child pairs affiliated to the Mexican Social Security Institute and that live in the city of Cuernavaca, Mexico. Pregnant women between 16-week and 22-week gestation are followed during the second half of their pregnancies, at birth and throughout their infant's first 48 months of life (at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, 24 months, 36 months and 48 months) at the clinic and at-home visits that include questionnaires, anthropometric measurements and biospecimen collection. The main exposure variables are infant feeding (breast feeding and complementary feeding) and genetic polymorphisms (fat mass and obesity-associated, leptin and adiponectin genes). Outcome variables include infant's growth, adiposity and metabolic risk factors. We will conduct longitudinal models and path analyses to identify the potential mediating role of satiety and appetite indicators (leptin, adiponectin, insulin concentrations, appetite and satiety perception). ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study protocol, data collection instruments, consent forms and procedures were approved by the institutional review boards of the National Institute of Public Health and the Mexican Social Security Institute in Mexico. Findings will be disseminated through conferences, peer-reviewed publications and meetings with stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Variability in the FADS2 gene, which codifies the Delta-6 Desaturases and modulates the conversion of essential n-3 and n-6 fatty acids into long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, might modify the impact of prenatal supplementation with n-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on neurodevelopment. OBJECTIVE: To assess if maternal FADS2 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) modified the effect of prenatal DHA on offspring development at 5 years. DESIGN: We conducted a post-hoc interaction analysis of the POSGRAD randomized controlled trial (NCT00646360) of prenatal supplementation with algal-DHA where 1094 pregnant women originally randomized to 400 mg/day of preformed algal DHA or a placebo from gestation week 18-22 through delivery. In this analysis, we included offspring with information on maternal genotype and neurodevelopment at 5 years (DHA = 316; Control = 306) and used generalized linear models to assess interactions between FADS2 SNPs rs174602 or rs174575 and prenatal DHA on neurodevelopment at 5 years measured with McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA). RESULTS: Maternal and offspring characteristics were similar between groups. At baseline, mean (±standard deviation) maternal age was 26 ± 5 years and schooling was 12 ± 4 years. Forty-six percent (46%) of the children were female. Maternal minor allele frequencies were 0.37 and 0.33 for SNPs rs174602 and rs174575, respectively. There were significant variations by SNP rs174602 and intervention group (p for interactions <0.05) where children in the intervention group had higher MSCA scores on the quantitative (DHA: mean ± SEM = 22.6 ± 0.9 vs. Control = 19.1 ± 0.9, mean difference (Δ) = 3.45; p = 0.01) and memory (DHA = 27.9 ± 1.1 vs. Control = 23.7 ± 1.1, Δ = 4.26; p = 0.02) scales only among offspring of TT (minor allele homozygotes). CONCLUSIONS: Maternal FADS2 SNP rs174602 modified the effect of prenatal DHA on cognitive development at 5 years. Variations in the genetic make-up of target populations could be an important factor to consider for prenatal DHA supplementation interventions.

Background: Complementary feeding practices and corresponding parental feeding styles influence nutritional status in later stages of childhood. Findings on the association of these variables with infant growth remain inconsistent; in Mexico, a research gap exists in this area. Research Aims: (1) To characterize parental feeding styles and complementary feeding practices, and (2) to evaluate the association of parental feeding styles with complementary feeding practices and infant growth at 6 and 9 months of age. Methods: Data were collected from a prospective Mexican birth cohort. Parental feeding styles, complementary feeding practices, and anthropometric data from 263 to 234 mother-child pairs (infants of 6 and 9 months of age, respectively) were analyzed. Logistic and linear regression models were used to determine the associations between variables. Results: The predominant parental feeding style was the "responsive style" (90%). Only 43.7 and 8.1% of 6- and 9-month-old infants, had adequate complementary feeding practices, respectively. At 6 months, mothers who were responsive to satiety signals had 11% lesser possibilities (OR = 0.89, 95% CI [0.80, 0.98]) of their infant having inadequate complementary feeding practices than their counterparts and "pressuring to finish" and "pressuring to eat cereal" sub-constructs were associated with lower weight for length and body mass index Z-scores (p = 0.02). Conclusions: A high proportion of infants (>40%) did not meet international recommendations. The "pressuring" parental feeding style sub-constructs were associated with growth indicators in 6-month old infants. This emphasizes the importance of promoting parental responsiveness to infant appetite and satiety signals to achieving adequate complementary feeding practices.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations of pregestational BMI, gestational weight gain (GWG) and breast-feeding at 1 month postpartum with four patterns of weight change during the first year after delivery: postpartum weight retention (PPWR), postpartum weight gain (PPWG), postpartum weight retention + gain (PPWR + WG) and return to pregestational weight. DESIGN: In this secondary analysis of a prospective study, we categorised postpartum weight change into four patterns using pregestational weight and weights at 1, 6 and 12 months postpartum. We evaluated their associations with pregestational BMI, GWG and breast-feeding using multinomial logistic regression. Results are presented as relative risk ratios (RRR) and 95 % CI. SETTING: Mexico City. PARTICIPANTS: Women participating in the Programming Research in Obesity, Growth, Environment and Social Stressors pregnancy cohort. RESULTS: Five hundred women were included (53 % of the cohort). Most women returned to their pregestational weight by 1 year postpartum (57 %); 8 % experienced PPWR, 14 % PPWG and 21 % PPWR + WG. Compared with normal weight, pregestational overweight (RRR 2·5, 95 % CI 1·3, 4·8) and obesity (RRR 2·2, 95 % CI 1·0, 4·7) were associated with a higher risk of PPWG. Exclusive breast-feeding, compared with no breast-feeding, was associated with a lower risk of PPWR (RRR 0·3, 95 % CI 0·1, 0·9). Excessive GWG, compared with adequate, was associated with a higher risk of PPWR (RRR 3·3, 95 % CI 1·6, 6·9) and PPWR + WG (RRR 2·4, 95 % CI 1·4, 4·2). CONCLUSIONS: Targeting women with pregestational overweight or obesity and excessive GWG, as well as promoting breast-feeding, may impact the pattern of weight change after delivery and long-term women's health.

There is limited evidence about the inflammatory potential of diet in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the Children's Dietary Inflammatory Index (C-DII) from 5 to 11 years with adiposity and inflammatory biomarkers in Mexican children. We analyzed 726 children from a birth cohort study with complete dietary information and measurements to evaluate adiposity at 5, 7 and 11 y and 286 children with IL-6, hsCRP, leptin and adiponectin information at 11 y. C-DII trajectories were estimated using latent class linear mixed models. We used linear mixed models for adiposity and logistic and multinomial regression for biomarkers. In girls, each one-point increase in C-DII score was associated with greater adiposity (abdominal-circumference 0.41%, p = 0.03; skinfold-sum 1.76%, p = 0.01; and BMI Z-score 0.05, p = 0.01). At 11 y the C-DII was associated with greater leptin (34% ≥ 13.0 ng/mL, p = 0.03) and hsCRP concentrations (29% ≥ 3.00 mg/L, p = 0.06) and lower adiponectin/leptin ratio (75% < 2.45, p = 0.02). C-DII trajectory 3 in boys was associated with a 75.2% (p < 0.01) increase in leptin concentrations and a 37.9% decrease (p = 0.02) in the adiponectin/leptin ratio. This study suggests that the inflammatory potential of diet may influence adiposity in girls and the homeostasis of adipose tissue and chronic subclinical inflammation in 11-year-old children.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the usual intake and the prevalence of inadequacy of selected nutrients in the Mexican population and the potential effect that the nutrient retention factors (NRF) could have on these estimates. Likewise, document the methodology used in the analysis of the 24 hours of the mid-way National Health and Nutrition Survey 2016 (Ensanut MC 2016). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dietary information from the Ensanut MC 2016 was analyzed with and without the use of NRFs. RESULTS: Results. Most nutrients evaluated showed a relevant inadequacy prevalence above 10% in all age groups. Likewise, we documented that, when NRFs were not applied, estimated intakes and prevalence were significantly under-estimated in a range of 2% to 55.5%. CONCLUSIONS: We documented the relevance of the application of NRFs for adequate estimation of the prevalence of inadequate intake of selected nutrients in population studies.

La no consideración de los FRN causó la subestimación en las prevalencias de inadecuación en un rango de 2% a 55.5%. CONCLUSIONES: . Se documenta la relevancia de la aplicación de FRN para la adecuada estimación de las prevalencias de inadecuación en estudios poblacionales.

BACKGROUND: Mexicans' adherence to food group's dietary recommendations is low and an inaccurate self-perception of dietary quality might perpetuate this low adherence. Our aim was to compare the intake and the adherence to the dietary recommendations for several food groups, subgroups, and to an overall Mexican Diet Quality Index (MxDQI), among those that perceived their diet as healthy vs. those that did not. METHODS: We analyzed data from 989 subjects 20-59 y old from the nationally representative Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey 2016. Dietary intake was collected with one 24-h recall and a repeated recall in 82 subjects. Self-perception of dietary quality was evaluated with the following question "Do you consider that your diet is healthy? (yes/no)". We used the National Cancer Institute method to estimate the usual intake. We compared the mean intake adjusted by sociodemographic variables and the percentage of adherence according to the self-perception of dietary quality among the whole sample and in sociodemographic subpopulations. RESULTS: Sixty percent perceived their diet as healthy, and their adherence to recommendations was low [20% for fruits and vegetables, < 8% for legumes, seafood and SSBs, and ~ 50% for processed meats and high in saturated fat and/or added sugar (HSFAS) products]. The mean number of recommendations they met was 2.8 (out of 7) vs. 2.6 among the rest of the population (p > 0.05), and the MxDQI score was 40 vs. 37 (out of 100 points). The only food groups and subgroups with a statistically significant difference between those that perceived their diet as healthy vs. unhealthy were fruits [38 g/d (95% CI 3, 73)], fruit juices [27 g/d (95% CI 2, 52)], industrialized SSBs [- 35 kcal/d (- 70, - 1)] and salty snacks [- 40 kcal/d (- 79, - 1)]. Other differences were small or inconsistent across subgroups of the population. CONCLUSIONS: Those that perceived their diet as healthy only had a slightly healthier diet than the rest of the population, moreover, their adherence to recommendations was very low. Hence, it is necessary to improve their nutrition knowledge.

OBJECTIVE: To identifiy the energy contribution (EC) of the food consumed in those older than five years and by sociodemographic characteristics in Mexican population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed data from 24-hour recalls from 7 983 subjects ≥5 years included in the Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición 2012 (Ensanut 2012). The EC to total daily energy intake of 50 foods allocated to eight food groups at national level and stratified by age, area of residence, region and socioeconomic level was estimated. RESULTS: Seven foods contributed 50% of total energy intake: tortilla and corn products (20.6%), sweet bread (6.6%), vegetable oils (4.9%), white bread and wheat products (4.9%), carbonated sugary drinks (4.6%), red meat (4.0%) and whole milk (4.0%). Other foods, which its consumption is recommended to increase due to its positive effects on health, showed minor contributions (less than 1.0%), with the exception of beans (3.3%). Great heterogeneity in intakes was observed between subgroups of the population. CONCLUSIONS: The identification of individual foods and their EC for both, food groups whose consumption should be increased as well as those that should be reduced can be useful for the design of regulatory actions and educational strategies aimed at reducing the diet related burden of disease.

Background: Consumption of foods high in energy, sugar, fat, and salt contributes to the increase in body mass index and the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children. Mexico implemented an 8% tax to non-essential energy-dense foods (NEDF) in 2014 as part of a national strategy to reduce obesity. Objective: We modeled the potential effect of the NEDF tax on body mass index and overweight and obesity in Mexican children (6-17 years). Materials and Methods: We used the Dynamic Childhood Growth and Obesity Model calibrated to Mexican children to simulate the potential 1-year effect of the NEDF tax on body weight. Inputs for the model included NEDF consumption, weight, and height, obtained from the 2012 Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey. To project the potential impact of the tax, we ran a first simulation without intervention and another reducing the caloric intake from NEDF in the proportion observed in the Mexican population after the tax (-5.1%). The tax effect was defined as the absolute difference in body mass index and prevalence of overweight and obesity between both models. Results: The tax on NEDF should lead to a mean reduction of 4.1 g or 17.4 kcal/day of NEDF at the population level. One year after the tax, mean body weight and body mass index should decrease 0.40 kg and 0.19 kg/m2; this translates into -1.7 and -0.4% points in overweight and obesity, respectively. Conclusions: The use of fiscal instruments to discourage the consumption of NEDF could help to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children.
